Venus Williams discusses Serena Williams’ presence in the audience and her first game back

Venus Williams, 42, said it was “thrilling” to be back on the court and also have her sister Serena in the stands supporting her. Williams, who is turning 43 on Saturday, sustained a hamstring injury in the first week of the 2023 season in Auckland.

After being out for six months, Williams made her return on Tuesday on the grass courts of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. In her first tournament back, Williams was close to beat 17-year-old Celine Naef but the rising Swiss star recovered from a set and a break down to beat the seven-time Grand Slam champion 3-6 7-6 (3) 6-2.

Even though Williams lost, it was still a positive day for her as she enjoyed her time on the court and didn’t feel any pain or soreness after the match.

Williams looking forward to playing more tennis “Being on the court yesterday was thrilling!

Just as exciting my family all came to cheer me on. Also I know I have all the support of my fans which means the world to me. I’m really happy with how I played and I am just getting used to playing matches again which is to be expected.

The best news is I walked off the court yesterday not hurt and not even sore after a long match and a string of really challenging injuries which means I have a chance to build on yesterday’s performance in my next events.

It’s not easy to continue to come back after unexpected injuries and delays but that’s life and I love what I do and I believe in what I am doing. If you fall 10 times get up 11, never quit before the miracle. Thank you to the @libema open for such a wonderful week!” Williams wrote on Instagram.

Next week, Williams is set to compete in Birmingham, where she received a main draw wildcard. It remains to be seen how well can Williams do next week on the grass courts of Birmingham.
