Why Serena Williams’ Inventive Kitchen Island Is a Favorite Among Designers

When retired tennis star Serena Williams remodeled the kitchen of her Miami-based abode, she left the details to V Starr, a luxurious design business owned by her sister Venus Williams. The result is a chic kitchen with several dramatic features, one of which is a custom-made island and geometric dining table combo. The look combines a shape frequently seen in modern kitchen islands while taking a cue from geometric mid-century modern home furnishings dating back to the 1950s and ’60s. To put together this unique design, dark wood is used to form an angular kitchen table jutting out of a more traditional white island.

“We are seeing more uniquely shaped furniture as people are wanting to lean away from normal and typical,” Amy Youngblood, owner of Amy Youngblood Interiors, mentioned in a Homes & Gardens interview. She adds that an out-of-the-ordinary geometric table like this should be the main focus of a room. “Homeowners are increasingly looking for ways to personalize their living spaces,” adds Moe Solof, a kitchen specialist at Fabuwood. He sees alternative islands and tables as a chance to highlight the unique aspects of a homeowner’s personality.

Other custom features in Serena Williams’ kitchen

Caesarstone countertops and light flooring that contrast the dark wood of the trapezoid-shaped table also complement the overall design of Serena Williams’ kitchen. She, in fact, shared on Instagram that she loves the “warmth and style” of the bespoke European oak wide plank flooring by Hakwood. However, the clever island and table unit are just some custom-made features in the room.

Getting her kitchen just right was vital since she’s the one who cooks most often in her family, although she hovers somewhere between being a great cook and a grab-and-go from the fridge type of person. “We had to find that balance within the design,” tennis star turned interior design expert Venus Williams told Architectural Digest about the plan to outfit her sister’s kitchen. The result, designed with the help of Serena Williams’ private chef, is a completely functional space with features like a custom-made mosaic marble backsplash with a gold diamond pattern.

Gleaning inspiration from Williams’ kitchen

Johnnygreig/Getty Images Among the other quite noticeable elements in Serena Williams’ kitchen is the Officine Gullo refrigerator and range hood in black with the brand’s logo and trim in gold. Her gold and black dual wall ovens by Gaggenau complete the coordinated look of the appliances, and the use of gold compliments the backsplash while black falls in line with the dark wood of the unique island table.

Even the lighting fixtures, which are sleek and modern pendants, have a gold finish that melds with three two-tone faucets finished in black and gold. The entire room pulls together custom elements and fine Italian appliances that, while out of reach in budget for many homeowners, can serve as inspiration to boost the look of a kitchen remodel by choosing more affordable black appliances or cabinetry, sleek countertops, and gold plumbing fixtures and hardware. Even following the cue of adding an unusual table or creating your own vision of a unique and functional island can make a kitchen uniquely your own.
